Empowering Dreams Through Education:
Les Freres-Unis

Join us in transforming lives and building a brighter future for African children through accessible education and community support.

From Poverty to Prosperity:
Join Us in Educating Guinea's Future

The majority of Guinea’s children enrolled in primary school are unable to reach the secondary level due to widespread poverty. Though the cost of education is low, the poverty rate is higher. Just $400 pays for a year of education for one child, changing a future and helping to break the cycle of poverty. Every dollar donated to Les Freres-Unis goes to covering students’ educational expenses: tuition, books, uniforms, medical care, and enrollment in after-school programs all year round. With your help, we can create a stronger future for these students and their families.

THE TWO SIDES

of Guinea

The world's richest country in natural resources with the poorest people

Today, there are two opposite sides of Guinea. The country has the highest reserves of Bauxite, iron ore, gold, diamonds and offshore oil resources. Yet according to the World Bank, nearly 44 percent of Guineans live below the national poverty line, and few families can afford primary education for their children.

Nutritional food, sanitation and water are not readily available for the impoverished in Guinea, and people have a limited right to housing, education and health care. Less than one-third of the children under 15 years are literate, which makes it below the average for western Africa. The public education system needs sufficient funding to provide an alternative to the private schools which are out of reach for most families. Lack of availability of qualified teachers, poor supply of educational resources, poor security for girls, and low standards of overall school infrastructure all contribute to the high illiteracy rate among the people of Guinea.

Right to Education

Every child should have the right to be educated and live a life with access to the basic necessities of life. As one of the poorest nations of the world, Guinea struggles with low primary school attendance and poor educational quality.

Education Facts in Guinea:

  • Before Guinea gained independence, the nation’s public education system was based on that of the French. In 1961, the country’s schools were all made public. The medium of communication is still French, perhaps as a temporary measure.
  • All children in Guinea between the ages of 7 and 13 are legally required to attend school for free, yet by 1997, only 54% of those who were eligible did so.
  • The secondary school enrolment ratio fell to 14%. Girls continue to enroll at far lower rates  (41%) than boys (68%). The average length of time girls spend in school is eight years.
  • Approximately 49% of people aged 15 to 24 have never attended a formal educational institution.
  • A typical classroom has one teacher and 80 students

The government’s funding for education is limited, there needs to be more classrooms to accommodate the number of kids who are old enough to attend school, and it isn’t easy to find school materials and equipment.

Les Freres Unis aims to help fill that gap.

Our Work
for Guinean Children

We at Les Freres-Unis are Guinean-rooted individuals who are lucky enough to study and work in the U.S.A. Our education and work have supported us to think about our people struggling in Guinea and help the future generation with education and a better lifestyle.

The founders currently support a small number of children, and Les Freres-United has already raised several thousand dollars. We are in collaboration with a range of community leaders who are enthusiastic about expanding the program and helping the children of Guinea fulfill their right to education.

Your contribution helps to continue expanding our program and improve the lives of Guinea's children through education.

Your gift of $35/month can cover one child’s education over the course of a year.

Les Freres Unis is a tax-exempt 501(c)3 organization; your donations are 100% tax deductible.
